Annual Furry Fun Walk

Tails were wagging and fur was flying at Ruston Parks and Recreation Department's fourth Annual Furry Fun Walk.  Since this was the fourth time to host this event, we wanted to try something a little different so we held the walk at Cook Park on Kavanaugh Road.

We hijacked Cook Park and everyone gathered in the "Barking Lot" and waited with baited breath and puppy breath for the morning's happenings.  The Barking Lot was full of dogs from A to Y that included an Alaskan Malamute to a Yorkshire Terrier.  Other breeds that were out enjoying the morning was a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, several Malteses, and a Grand Dane.  Some of the many donations were provided by Platinum Performance, Natures Menu, Canidae, Blue Dog Bakery, Diamond Pet Food, Earthbath, Dogswell, Beefeaters, NUPRO, Animal Naturals, Fruitables, Sojourner's, Natura, NaturVet and many more!

We had two special guests that participted in the walk with us:  Sparky, the City's Fire Department mascot dog as well as Louisiana Tech's Bulldog mascot, Tech XX (XL) and his handler, Chance Snow.  We are happy to report that everyone completed the one mile stroll but some of our four-legged friends needed a little help from their two-legged owners.  Following the walk, we held a raffle and then each dog owner received a goodie bag full of treats, samples, coupons, and toys for their pet.

Thanks to Pick of the Litter, Tommy's Feed, Ruston Animal Clinic, O'Neals Farm and Garden, Community Trust Bank and Sonic for their generous donations.  And, thanks to everyone who came out for RPAR's Annual Furry Fun Walk!

We hope to see you at the fifth annual event on Saturday, March 21, 2011 at 9:00am at Cook Park and bring a friend!

Home Run Derby

The Home Run Derby is hosted during each of our regular softball seasons.  The women hit from field #1 and attempt to hit a pitched ball over the 200 foot fence and the men swing on field #2 and try to hit over the 300 foot fence.  Each participant will receive a maximum of 5 outs or 12 swings, whichever comes first.  Foul balls and swinging strikes will count as outs.  The ball must travel over the softball field fence to be considered a home run.  The event is free and we present a best male and female hitter with prizes.  For more information, contact the RPAR office at 255-5800.

Stroller Strides

As excited as new Moms are about the birth of their baby, they also cannot believe the body that's been left behind.  A round, voluptuous body seemed beautiful while pregnant and seems like bread dough after labor and birth.  What makes matters worse is that new Moms usually don't have time to do traditional exercise, and should not be dieting.  Wait, there is hope through RPAR's Stroller Strides classes.  And, you don't have to have a jogging stroller to attend class - just make sure your stroller is sturdy and not prone to tipping.

Stroller Strides incorporates the environment, resistance tubing and Mom's stroller to get an all-over body workout in just 60 minutes. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:15am in Cook Park, Mom's gather for their one hour workout with certified instructor Maryanne Smith.  For more detailed information, please contact her at 318-243-7727 or visit www.strollerstrides.net/ruston
