Communications Division
Personnel of the Ruston Police Department Communications Division are the citizens’ first contact with first responders in times of emergency. Our Communications Division consists of 5 full-time dispatchers supplemented at times by the records division personnel. The role of our communications personnel is very challenging and rewarding and requires significant knowledge, skill and ability in responding to citizen need and dispatching police officers. The work is fast paced, time critical, stressful and demanding and requires good communications skills, the ability to multi-task and resource management skill.
Each year, over 63,000 incoming calls are handled by our communications center. More than 54,000 of these calls required some type of dispatch action by our communications personnel, with several thousand of these calls being true emergencies.
Our communications equipment includes a 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone system, Computer Aided Dispatch, multi-frequency computerized radio system, Graphical Information System (GIS Mapping), and Automatic Vehicle Location via Global Position Satellite system.
Members of the Ruston Police Department Communications Division have a job like no other. It is a rewarding career for people who want a job that provides personal satisfaction derived from assisting the public in their time of need.
