Dixie Center for the Arts
|
A hidden gem for several decades, the Ruston Dixie Theater has a long and rich history as a cultural emblem for the city. It was originally built in 1928 as a theater for silent films and concerts. Although it has seen many owners and renovations, the building still stands on its original site, and is part of the National Register of Historic Places.
In the mid-1990s the Dixie Theater closed its doors for performances, and became an office space only. Thankfully, the citizens of Ruston had a vision for its preservation, and a campaign began just a few years later for the restoration of the Dixie. After many creative and successful fundraisers, the familiar Dixie star shone again, and the Dixie Center for the Arts celebrated a grand re-opening in 2006.
Today the Dixie is a cultural center for the city with a full season of concerts and shows, a gallery that highlights local artists’ work, and a community center for holding meetings or events. Visit www.dixiecenter.org for a schedule of events.
