The mission of the Office of Environmental Services is to serve as a resource to the citizens of Ruston to insure that all operating entities, both public and private, operate in compliance with federal and state regulations as well as local ordinances. Compliance by businesses, the general public, and other city agencies is assured through technical assistance, education, and enforcement. These three methods are accomplished by investigating complaints, conducting inspections, conducting field and laboratory tests, and reviewing construction plans. Generally speaking, our activities revolve around the following areas:
- Drinking water quality
- Wastewater treatment plant discharge quality
- Commercial/Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Program
- Grease management and reduction program for restaurants and other food preparation facilities through the inspection of grease traps and interceptors
- Coordination of solid and hazardous waste materials programs, including the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day program
- Coordination of indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring programs
- Coordination of investigations for possible asbestos and lead paint contamination
- Management of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Programs (SWPPP)
- Inspections, enforcement, and technical assistance for other City departments
- Coordinate site clean-ups following spills or other non-permitted releases to the environment
