About Ruston

Federal Building

The historic Federal Building joined downtown Ruston upon its completion in 1909. The solid, rectangular structure was the first one to be built in Ruston with Indiana limestone, and today is one of only two buildings made of limestone in the city. The renaissance architecture and Anglo-American theme gives the building its stately presence. This public building was originally the post office for the city, with an office for the postmaster, a holding room for valuable packages, and a large open room used to sort the mail. The post office boxes were also in this large room.

The building closed in the early 1960s, but was re-modeled in 1963, and re-opened as an office for a construction company. The interior has been completely renovated, but the exterior is nearly the same as it was at the time it was built, contributing greatly to the historic flavor of downtown Ruston.
