Fire Prevention
|
The Ruston Fire Department has been committed to fire prevention since 1995. With a full time Public Information Officer to coordinate events and to take the National Fire Protection Association’s yearly fire prevention message to the public.
Our latest tool to help protect the community is our Fire Safety Trailer. This was purchased with a grant from FEMA for $68,600. We will be taking this to every school in Lincoln Parish that has children 14 and under. As part of the grant, we will also take it to some of the surrounding communities as well. Our goal is to teach 6000 children a year. The trailer can also be used to educate those 65 and older about preventing cooking fires and how to escape a house fire. Children 14 and under and people 65 and older die at twice the national average as other people in house fires. 80% of fire deaths occur in the home. Most of these are caused by cooking fires and candles.
The trailer also came with a residential fire sprinkler prop. This tool will help teach homeowners how fire sprinklers work. With a properly installed residential sprinkler system and 1 functioning smoke detector your chance of dying in a house fire are reduced by 84%.
