Homeowner's Checklist

  • Change water twice a week in birdbaths, flower vases and pet watering bowls.
  • Empty and store, cover, or turn over plastic wading pools and toys that catch water.
  • Throw away, store, cover, or turn over cans, jars, containers, buckets, pails and watering cans.
  • Replace plant saucers with “pot feet” or fill saucers with pea gravel.
  • Take old tires to Public Works at 701 East Tennessee Avenue for Department of Environmental Quality approved disposal.
  • Report standing water in catch basins at road corners and storm drains to the Public Works Department at 318-242-7703.
  • Report abandoned swimming pools to the Code Enforcement Division at 318-251-8669.
  • Keep lids closed on garbage containers.
  • Pick up litter, such as aluminum cans, that collect water.
  • Clean or replace clogged roof gutters and downspouts.
  • Cut the backside of corrugated plastic pipe attached to downspouts to allow water to drain completely.
  • Clean out and drain air conditioning drain lines.
  • Repair leaky outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems.
  • Level low spots in your yard and fill tire ruts with sand or dirt.
  • Improve flowerbed drainage by digging trenches to allow water to flow and absorb into the ground.
  • For ornamental ponds, add mosquito-eating minnows to control mosquito larva, or aerate with a pump.
  • Avoid over-watering your yard. Make sure that sprinkler systems are set correctly to prevent over-watering.
  • Remove tree stumps or fill stumps and holes with sand or mortar.
  • Clean out and cover utility meter vaults.
  • Turn your wheelbarrows, utility carts, and wagons upside down or store under a cover.
  • Empty boat covers and vehicle tarps frequently.
