Technology
The Department continually explores advancements in technology that may improve operational effectiveness. Within recent years, through both grant and budgeted funding we have been successful in equipping all police patrol vehicles with “in-car video and audio” recording equipment that gives the officer the capability to record most police activities. These recordings have proven to be extremely beneficial both in evidence collection as well as resolving citizen complaints and providing useful training material. Our vehicles are also equipped with lap top computers which give the officer the necessary access to the Louisiana Motor Vehicle and Drivers License database, as well as criminal information and history through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). This capability not only relieves the dispatcher of additional activity but gives the officer “on the street” information and in some many cases a photograph of the violator which is sometimes helpful in resolving an investigation.
Additionally, most of the Ruston Police Department vehicles are equipped with GPS tracking equipment allowing the police dispatcher to track the movement of any police vehicle at any time. This can be extremely valuable to the safety of a police officer should that officer become unable to call for help.
