Solid Waste
The Solid Waste Department provides garbage, yard trash, and bulky item collection services for residential and commercial customers inside the Ruston city limits. Residential customers pay a flat rate on their electric bill for garbage and trash collection. The City provides residential customers either a wheeled cart or use of a shared dumpster, free of any additional charge. Commercial customers’ container sizes and collection frequency is based on their volume requirements.
The Solid Waste Division can be reached at 318-242-7703 on weekdays, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for information regarding the following:
- Customer billing for garbage and trash collection
- How to place your refuse container out for pickup:
Residential garbage containers should be placed on the curb with the handle and wheels pointed toward the house. Be sure to place your container at least 5 feet from mail boxes, poles, or trees. If all of the household garbage will not fit inside the container, one plastic bag, sealed securely, may be placed on top of the container.
- When to place your refuse container out for pickup:
Regular household garbage is collected twice weekly. You should place your can out for pickup the evening before your scheduled pickup. All containers must be removed from the street within a 24-hour period after pickup.
- Types of refuse that may not be placed in a residential container:
Medical waste, hazardous waste, and explosives.
- Disposal of hazardous waste
The City of Ruston holds an annual Household Hazardous Waste day each May. You can bring oils, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, paint, and other hazardous waste items to the Public Works Complex and the City will dispose of it for you.
- Where to place yard waste, furniture, and appliances for pickup
These items should be placed near the street for collection. Be sure to place these items at least 5 feet from mail boxes, cars, meters, overhead utility lines, or other obstructions.
