About Ruston

T.L. James House

This famous old residence of Colonial Revival architecture and Italianate style is one of the few remaining beauties of historic Ruston. It was built by Colonel Thomas Cunningham Standifer, a Civil War hero, on land he purchased from Mr. Russ for $450. The building began in 1884 at the beginning of Ruston’s history, and was in the Standifer family until it was purchased by Mr. T.L. James in 1921.

Mr. James remodeled the two-story wooden home in 1926, when he also added a five car garage to the rear of the home. Many of the original features of the home are still intact, including most windows, the grand staircase, two chimneys, and several mantels. Even more features still stand from the 1926 renovation, which is also around the time that the decorative portico was constructed in front of the home, giving an unmistakable classical mark to the architecture.

It is one of more than twenty buildings in Ruston on the National Register of Historic Places, and has served well as an elegant location for hosting parties, receptions, and other special events.
