Water Distribution

The Water Distribution Division maintains approximately 156 miles of water mains ranging in size from two-inch to sixteen-inch diameter, with a majority of the lines being six- and eight-inch diameter. In addition to the underground water mains, department personnel also maintains approximately 3,000 water valves, 1,250 fire hydrants, and 8,500 water meters for both residential and non-residential service. We also maintain water supply connections to the Riser Road Water System and the Town of Vienna, and we have emergency supply connections to Water District 1, Water District 3, the Wesley Chapel Water System, and the Mount Olive Water System.

While the main function of the water distribution system is to deliver a fresh supply of high quality potable water to our customers, fire protection is a secondary but equally important function of the water distribution system. When fire hydrants that are tested by either Water Department personnel or members of the Ruston Fire Department are identified as being out of date or no longer serviceable, repair or replacement of fire hydrants or other appurtenances is carried out by Water Department personnel.

Water department personnel not only make repairs to the system, they routinely install new water mains and make service taps for new meter installations. For installations that require more time or equipment than the Water Department can devote, the City will contract the work to licensed contractors as a capital improvements project. All mains and appurtenances that are installed by City personnel, contractors or developers are designed and inspected during construction to insure that installations comply with State standards and applicable City codes.
